I've engraved more materials than I can count, but the one that surprised me most costs about fifty cents. It isn't wood, acrylic, or leather. It's a plain glazed ceramic tile from the hardware store — and it produces some of the sharpest, highest-contrast marks I've ever pulled off my desktop laser engraver.

The first time I ran a design on a tile, I expected a throwaway experiment. Instead, the engraving came out so crisp it looked screen-printed. That one test became a weekend obsession, then a small product line. Here's everything I learned, including the mistakes that cost me a few tiles before I figured the process out.

Why ceramic tile engraves so cleanly

The magic isn't the laser burning through the tile — ceramic doesn't really burn. When the beam hits the surface, it shatters and removes the thin glassy glaze, exposing the lighter clay body underneath. That's where the contrast comes from: a dark or colored glaze on top, bright ceramic below. The result is a permanent, high-definition mark that won't scratch off or fade the way paint or a decal will.

Because the glaze is glass, the laser doesn't tear a ragged groove the way it can in soft wood. The edge stays clean, with almost no charring and no soot. There's no masking to peel and no residue to scrub — a detail that reminded me of the masking tape trick I used to rely on for wood. On tile, you simply don't need it.

Which tiles work (and which to skip)

Not every tile works. You want glazed ceramic tile — the kind with a smooth, shiny surface. Porcelain is harder and tends to engrave lighter, so start with basic wall or floor tile. Dark glazes, especially black, navy, or deep green, give the strongest contrast because the clay underneath reads almost white.

Skip unglazed terracotta and natural stone at first; the beam soaks in and leaves a faint, dusty mark. Also watch for heavily textured or crackle glazes, which can chip unevenly and ruin fine detail.

The settings I settled on

Every machine behaves differently, so run a small test grid on the back of a tile before committing to a full design. For my setup, I landed around 60–70% power at a moderate speed — slower than wood, because you're fracturing glass rather than charring fibers. If the mark looks pale and dusty, nudge the power up. If the glaze starts cracking or flaking away in chunks, back off.

I also learned to do a single pass. Running the laser over the same tile twice doesn't deepen the mark the way it does in wood — the second pass just chips the freshly exposed clay and muddies fine lines. One clean pass at the right power beats two careful ones every time.

One more thing I wish I'd known sooner: keep the tile perfectly level. A tile sitting even a millimeter higher on one corner blurs the engraving at the opposite edge, and on such a smooth surface the focus difference shows up fast.

What to make with it

Coasters are the obvious starting point and the easiest thing to sell. A set of four with monograms, coordinates, or line-art illustrations makes a genuinely useful gift. But tiles scale further than I expected: trivets, house-number plaques, backsplash accents, memorial pieces, and even wedding-favor tiles. Because the raw material is so cheap, your margins are almost all labor and design.

A twelve-dollar box becomes a few dozen finished pieces, with no expensive blank eating into every experiment. Because tiles are uniform, I started running four at once in a grid, which cut my per-piece time dramatically. The catch nobody mentions

Two things tripped me up. First, the edges: a cut tile is surprisingly sharp, so sand the edges or frame the piece before handing it to a customer. Second, the dust. Engraving glaze throws off fine glassy particles, so good ventilation matters more than it does with wood. A quick wipe with a damp cloth keeps the finished piece clean and ready to package.

Ceramic tile is the cheapest upgrade I've ever made to my workflow. The same design that looked muddy on a wood blank turned razor-sharp on a ninety-nine-cent tile. If you've been chasing sharper results on expensive blanks, grab a box of plain glazed tiles and run the same design. I'd bet the first one surprises you as much as it surprised me.
